American Apparel, which is based in Los Angeles, has expanded its retail operations in the UK with its new base in the Briggate Shopping Centre in the city.

Shaw Industries shut its plant in Gordon County, Georgia last year with the loss of 390 jobs as the recession affected business, Fibre2fashion reports.

However, with the US economy on the mend, the company has launched "Operation Renew" and as part of this is set to re-open the facility, providing 175 jobs at first and possibly leading to another 125 in time.

The news provider suggested the company may reach an agreement on a stimulus package with the Development Authority of Gordon County.

Funding of $32 million (£21 million) would be needed to renew equipment at the plant.
